The Flash goes DAB+ only from 2017

The Flash

Are you DAB+ ready? Local classic rock and blues station, The Flash, becomes a DAB+ only service from 2017. This means that older DAB digital radios will no longer be able to tune in to the station. Right now, we’re broadcasting The Flash in both classic DAB and DAB+.

If your radio supports DAB+, look for Flash + in your station list. If you can tune it in and hear audio – great! Your radio supports DAB+. If you can only see Flash in the station list or Flash + is silent, then unfortunately your radio is not DAB+ compatible.

The good news is that most in-car radios, and most modern digital radios are DAB+ compatible. Look for the DAB+ logo or green digital tick mark to be certain of a radio that supports DAB+.

More planned engineering works

signalok

Between 22:00 and 04:00 on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th September there will engineering work taking place to the network we use to deliver audio from our stations to our transmitter. This means that on the above dates and times, there may be a break our transmissions on each night of up to 15 minutes, but we’ll try to keep this as possible.

UK news radio service set to launch in Portsmouth first

news-radio-1

A radio station offering a 10-minute rolling news service for the UK is set to launch on DAB digital radio, launching first in Portsmouth.

News Radio UK will provide news, sport, business, showbiz, weather and travel news on a 10 minute loop 24 hours a day when it launches on October 10th at 10am.

The station is a venture between local company Radio Response, national news providers Radio News Hub and radio industry website RadioToday.co.uk.

Jamie Fletcher of Radio NewsHub says:

“We’re really excited to launch the service in Portsmouth first.  Listeners will probably have to press the ‘retune’ or ‘scan’ button on their DAB radio to receive the service.”

Southsea resident David Harber from Radio Response added:

“We are teasing listeners with a sample right now and we’re inviting interested parties to get in contact. I’m proud to have this service launch in Portsmouth before any other UK city.”

The all-speech station will launch at 10am, October 10th, 2016 on the Portsmouth DAB multiplex and at NewsRadioUK.com.

RadioToday’s managing editor Roy Martin explains more:

“The subject of news has been more prominent than ever over the last few months, but a simple format of rolling news isn’t available from any of the current national broadcasters. News Radio UK will be filling that gap in the market, working towards launching on a national terrestrial platform.

“The station aims to provide a snapshot of the day’s news whenever you listen, with the one-minute round-ups updated all day, every day.”

News Radio UK will be broadcast in DAB+. This means radios that do not support DAB+ will be unable to find this service. As a guide, look for the DAB+ logo or green Digital Radio tick mark to be certain of a radio that supports DAB+.

First anniversary of Portsmouth DAB minimux – Radio Stations Celebrate

Angel Radio’s Portsmouth DAB minimux today celebrates its first anniversary of full broadcasts. The minimux, a DAB multiplex licenced as part of an Ofcom trial to examine the viability of using low cost DAB transmission equipment and providing access to DAB for smaller services, launched on 19th August 2015. Since then, the minimux has grown from carrying six services to seventeen, with two more stations due to launch within the next few weeks.

The Portsmouth minimux has pushed the boundaries of what had been expected of the Ofcom trial by not only adding more services, but by also exploiting technology such as DAB+ and DAB slideshow. Angel Radio works with Hampshire based company Commtronix Ltd to provide transmission services and both organisations have provided consultancy to DAB minimuxes involved in the Ofcom trial in other areas of the UK.

Programming has also been important, with a wide variety of formats, niche and mainstream catered for. Twelve services feature some kind of Portsmouth targeted content, and thirteen services are broadcast in stereo, a record for a UK DAB multiplex. Originally a nine month trial, the licence has been extended by two more years to 18th May 2018, by which time it is hoped a permanent licencing regime will be in place for DAB minimuxes.

Tony Smith, founder of Angel Radio said:

“Over the past year, we have demonstrated that DAB digital radio broadcasting is a viable platform for broadcasting to smaller areas than traditional multiplexes, with lower overheads, resulting in broadcasters being able to transmit on DAB that might otherwise have been excluded. All the services on-air at the end of the original nine month licence term re-contracted with us for our extended licence term, and we see that as a resounding endorsement of our work in Portsmouth. The unsung hero of this project is Angel Radio’s Head of Digital Development, Ash Elford, who has worked tirelessly to ensure Portsmouth digital radio listeners are the best catered for in the whole of the UK”

Martin Kirby, founder of local classic rock station The Flash said:

“After being largely restricted to internet streaming for over 3 years and competing with thousands of other internet based stations, the option of affordable DAB broadcasts to our local area of Portsmouth came as a godsend to The Flash and has lifted our profile enormously. This experiment has not only opened up the airwaves for smaller, community based stations like ours, but has also delivered an incredible listener choice in the Portsmouth area. I firmly believe these small scale DAB broadcasts will be the tipping point for any radio fans still considering the purchase of a DAB radio, and I hope to be broadcasting this way for many years to come”.

Ian Walker, CEO of stations JACK and JACK 2 said:

“We are thrilled to be working with Angel Radio and having both of our award winning brands JACK and JACK 2 broadcasting across Portsmouth. We are also continuing to see month on month growth in streaming numbers across the region.”

Chris Stevens, founder of Chris Country said:

“We’re delighted to have Chris Country on air in Portsmouth. We get lots of positive feedback from the area, and along with our neighbouring stations on the multiplex, it’s great to be able to bring a previously unavailable format to the South Coast.”

A website at www.solentwireless.com provides updates and information about the Portsmouth DAB minimux. It is also possible to follow the DAB minimux on Twitter and Facebook. The name Solent Wireless is used for public communications to avoid any misunderstanding that Angel Radio owns the services it broadcasts.

Quick facts:
17 services on air now – 10 DAB+ and 7 vanilla DAB
12 services featuring Portsmouth specific content
13 stereo services – more than any other UK DAB multiplex
14 services with DAB slideshow, with 3 more services expected to gain the feature soon
